Western Flyers (184 for 2) beat Bangers & Smashers (104 for 3) by 80 runs.
Western Flyers made it
three wins out of three in the group stages of the BAWA cup and guaranteed
themselves a spot in the quarter finals after a comprehensive victory over
Bangers and Smashers on Monday evening. In doing so, Western Flyers set a new
club record for a 20 over match as they scored a commanding 184 runs.
With minimal changes to
the team and the batting order starting to have a somewhat settled look to it,
Atiq won the toss and opted to bat against a team who had won one and lost one
of their previous group games. The bowling was not looking too threatening as
Shehan and Tim soon set about building a big opening partnership. 10 overs in
and the openers were still out there having gone along at more than 8 an over,
with Shehan scoring fluently and Tim batting a little more patiently. Tim
missed a straight one and departed for a patient if not slightly pedestrian 20
off 37 balls, but with Shehan still going strong the innings was set up nicely
for a big total. Captain Atiq came in at number three and faced only 3 balls
before controversially being given out lbw by Siva to a ball that struck him
above the pad on his thigh. It takes a brave man to give his own captain out
lbw.
The quick wickets did
nothing to halt them momentum however, Anu joined Shehan in the middle and the
runs kept flowing. Shehan hit his 9th boundary of the day and in
doing so reached 50 for the second time this season and gave himself a
well-deserved rest. Thusitha came in at number five and played a near perfect
late innings cameo, crashing 37 runs off 21 balls, while Anu finished 27 not
out at just over a run a ball as WFCC finished on a record 184 runs.
It was always going to be
a tough total to chase down and the key for Bangers & Smashers would be not
losing early wickets. After Yameen had opened up with a typically tight over
which conceded just one run, Thusitha came on from the other end and made the
early breakthrough as a nicely flighted delivery deceived the batsman and
scattered the bails. A quiet period followed, Bangers & Smashers keeping
their wickets intact but not scoring quickly enough to keep themselves in the
game.
The game was soon
beginning to peter out, and whilst the victory was assured Western Flyers would
be frustrated by their inability to bowl out the opposition. Dropped catches
were not helping the cause as a number of chances were spilled. Thusitha made
amends for his teammates blunders as he took a good catch in the deep off Owen’s
bowling as the second wicket fell. Only one more wicket would fall and it went
to Atiq as Tim, who himself had spilled an easy chance moments earlier, held on
this time at mid-off. Western Flyers were just unable to restrict their
opponents to less than 100 as they posted a total of 104-3, mainly down to a
solid 48 not out from the opening batsmen.
Another comfortable win
for WFCC and as they go into the final group game, a top of the table clash
with Knockout knights, they will not only need to improve with their catching
but also find a little more penetration with the ball. For now however, a place
in the quarter finals awaits.
