Bristol
Chargers (230-6) beat Western Flyers (69 all out) by 161 runs
Western Flyers run in
the 2014 BAWA tournament came to a humbling end on Monday evening as they were
beaten in emphatic fashion by last years winners Bristol Chargers. Having won
all four of their previous fixtures to finish at the summit of group A Western
Flyers were in confident mood prior to the quarter final draw last week.
However, that mood was soon dampened by a draw which bizarrely lacks any kind
of seeding system. When two of the only three teams to win all their group
stage games are drawn against each other at the quarter final stage you have to
question the logic behind the organisers methods. It seems these methods are in
as much need of a complete overhaul as Alistair Cook's captaincy. Still if
you aim to win the tournament you will have to beat the best teams and the draw
presented an opportunity for WFCC to see just how far they have come since the
huge defeat they suffered to Bristol Chargers in the group stages the previous
season.
There was still a bit
of rain in the air as the players arrived and with the light already a little
gloomy there wasn't going to be a lot to consider for whichever captain won the
toss. As it was Bristol Chargers were the lucky ones who chose to bat and after
they had hit a staggering 250 runs in the last clash between these two the aim
for the day was to restrict them a little more. It didn't look like much had
changed in the early overs, the boundaries soon started flowing and four overs
in Chargers were going along at more than 10 an over. The breakthrough came in
the 5th over off the bowling of Yameen as Saad showed the benefit of recent
training sessions as he held onto a huge catch in the deep that seemed to hang
in the air for an age. It did very little to stem the run rate though as the
captain rotated his bowlers in an unsuccessful attempt to stop the batsmen from
settling.
A second wicket
finally came once Atiq brought himself on to bowl, once again a big hit into
the deep and it was taken wonderfully by Ian who misjudged the flight and ran
in too far before backpedaling and taking it one handed above his head in
spectacular fashion. This time however the breakthrough was followed by more
wickets. Tim was brought on to bowl the next over and found a good line as he
trapped the new batsman lbw, then just two balls later the opening batsman who
had nearly reached his fifty decided to go big and was caught in the deep with
Ian once again the grateful recipient.
At this point it
really looked like WFCC were in the game. Four wickets down, two new batsmen at
the crease and the score at 130 off 13 overs. A couple more wickets and a very
chase-able target of around 180 could be set. However that wasn't how it played
out. Three expensive overs from Shehan, Owen and Tim and suddenly the total had
raced up past 200. Two more wickets were to fall, both bowled as Yameen and
Atiq picked up their deserved second wickets but by the time the 20 overs were
up there were 230 runs on the board.
A sizable target and
it would need WFCC to score their biggest ever total by some margin to chase it
down but in T20 anything can happen. Atiq and Shehan went out to open. If any
two batsmen in the team could get off to the quick start needed to chase this
total down then it would be these two. It was a watchful start as they hit 18
off the first 3 overs. However just as they started to try and hit out a little
the wickets started to tumble. Atiq went first, cracking a ball straight back
to the bowler who took a sharp catch. Shehan followed next over caught in the
deep and two balls later Tim was cleaned bowled playing across the line in ugly
fashion. Anu and Saad were next in. Saad soon departed as he tickled a rising
delivery on it's way through and was snaffled in the slips. Anu was starting to
accumulate nicely but was soon involved in a mix up that lead to Thusitha
getting run out. Having missed out on a full toss the ball rolled past the
keeper down leg and Thusitha called him through for the single but Anu was too
busy practicing his shot/berating himself/moaning about the world cup on
facebook to notice. Next in was Ian but he couldn't translate his heroics in
the field to some runs with the bat. In fairness he got a bit of a jaffa first
ball which just clipped the top of off stump and sent the bails tumbling.
Anu, now starting to
look well set, was then controversially given out by Owen caught down the leg
side off the gloves despite protests that the ball actually struck his shirt on
the way through. Siva was next to depart, unable to resist having a swing at
the slower ball and lolloping the ball up in the air for the slip to run around
and catch. The three quick hand claps before he took the catch showed that
while Bristol Chargers are very good cricketers they aren't very graceful
winners. Yameen and Nathan were the next two in and Yameen again started
playing some shots that showed he should probably be batting a good few places
higher. Nathan was then stumped by his opposite number as he went for a big
swipe to leave just the one wicket remaining and with the score not even past
50 a complete humiliation was on the cards. The win was obviously long gone,
but Yameen managed to salvage a little pride as he struck five boundaries and
took the score up to 69 before Owen chopped onto his stumps to bring
proceedings to a close.
