BAWA Cup (20 over): WFCC vs Dirty Dozen, Match Report & Scorecard

Western Flyers (149/7) beat Dirty Dozen (112/7) by 37 runs.

Match Report -

Flyers played their first match of the BAWA cup against a team called ‘Dirty Dozen’ who consisted of Flyers legend Oliver McCambridge. With captain Shehan running slightly late, VC Owen won the toss and opted to bat first.

Opener Shehan finally turned up and in the absence of Tim, Yameen opened up with him. The pair, more so Shehan had got off to a bright breezy start before Yameen was caught out hooking in the deep. Mahdi joined Shehan and the pair ran very well between the wickets thus ticking the score along and were looking to build a solid partnership. Shehan’s knock came to an end after hitting one back to the opening bowler for a well-made 27.

Imran had walked out and disaster struck where he unfortunately took a blow to the head from the other opening bowler who had bowled a beamer that just deflected off the side of his head attempting a pull. The scenes were not pleasant following the blow but I commend everyone including the opposition that gathered round to attend to Imran. Despite wanting to bat on, Imran had to be dragged off (literally) and I must thank Nathan for actively stepping in to take control of the situation and seeing that Imran got the right care and attention before being taken to A&E for proper medical attention. It makes me proud to say that the Flyers are truly more than just a cricket club and I thank everyone for the way they all attended to incident.

In the meantime the cricket continued with Ian coming to bat alongside Mahdi. Ian batted particularly well striking 2 sixes and 1 four making him the top scorer of the innings and essentially enabled the lower order batsmen to capitalise from the solid platform with further good knocks from Naufel and debutant Thiyanan (TJ) to set a competitive 149-7.

TJ and Owen shared the opening spell of bowling where both bowled very tightly and gave away almost nothing. This set the tone for the rest of DD innings where they were already behind the rate with TJ getting the breakthrough taking a stunning return catch to dismiss the opener. The remaining bowlers bowled well with good discipline and with added variations.  The young leg spinner Mahdi created lots of chances and was unlucky not to get more than 1 wicket. Yameen (back from assisting Imran at A&E) was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets although it could be said the game was pretty much sealed from the tight opening spell by Owen and TJ.

Ground fielding was generally good with special mention to Nathan for doing an exemplary job with the gloves in his comeback game. The catching remains a concern with a total of 6 going down in the evening. This will certainly be of concern for the Flyers and they must rectify this for future games with tougher opponents coming up. With all that and said, the Flyers had prevailed by 37 runs to set them off to a solid start to their BAWA cup campaign!

The Man of the Match goes to Ian Randles for being top scorer but more importantly binding the innings together thus ensuring a solid platform for later batsmen.
