WFCC in form batsman Tim and Ian on show

A day after a very hard defeat saw the Flyers in League action vs Whicheloe. Once again the Flyers were short on players and infact were playing with the same 9 from the previous evening. This time Owen had successfully won the toss and opted to bat first.

Western Flyers (134/6) beat Pie Chuckers (91/7) by 43 runs.

Match Report -

Flyers in action against Pie Chuckers
Despite a very late start from the opposition getting the start time wrong, play eventually got under way with the Flyers batting first through mutual agreement (2nd time this season) between Shehan (on time for the 2nd time in a row) and the opposition skipper.

League Cup (20 over): WFCC vs Henleaze Old Boys CC, Match Report & Scorecard

Henleaze Old Boys CC (130/5) beat Western Flyers (127/6) by 5 wickets.

Match Report -

Conventional wisdom dictates that batting first in evening games at the prestigious BAWA ground is a no-brainer.  The light fades, the pub calls, and on this particular occasion the famous Henleaze dinner awaits.  With that in mind and Shehan answering all his critics by turning up on time and winning the toss, the Flyers thought that the scene was set for a victory against a historically solid Henleaze side despite being a man down due to late drop outs.

League Cup (20 over): WFCC vs Bushwackers, Match Report & Scorecard

Bushwackers (145/6) beat Western Flyers (122/4) by 23 runs.

Match Report -

Western Flyers suffered an agonising defeat at the hands of Bushwackers in their opening match of the Bristol Construction Industries league. Flyers lost the toss and were asked to bowl as Yameen called incorrectly, forced to stand in for Shehan who was once again running late. Not the most punctual start to the season for our new captain, rumours circulating in the dressing room are that should he make it a third late show in a row then his tenure will only be saved from mutiny if he were to buy a round of drinks for the entire team.

BAWA Cup (20 over): WFCC vs Dirty Dozen, Match Report & Scorecard

Western Flyers (149/7) beat Dirty Dozen (112/7) by 37 runs.

Match Report -

Flyers played their first match of the BAWA cup against a team called ‘Dirty Dozen’ who consisted of Flyers legend Oliver McCambridge. With captain Shehan running slightly late, VC Owen won the toss and opted to bat first.

Opener Shehan finally turned up and in the absence of Tim, Yameen opened up with him. The pair, more so Shehan had got off to a bright breezy start before Yameen was caught out hooking in the deep. Mahdi joined Shehan and the pair ran very well between the wickets thus ticking the score along and were looking to build a solid partnership. Shehan’s knock came to an end after hitting one back to the opening bowler for a well-made 27.

Friendly (40 over): WFCC vs Bristol Malayalees, Match Report & Scorecard

Western Flyers (232/8) beat Bristol Malayalees (136 all out) by 96 runs.

Match Report -

The pitch used for the season opener at the Suils Club (Bath)
Yameen opened the batting with debutant left hander Irfan on what was a slow wet track from the overnight rain. The pair got off to a steady watchful start and gradually ticked the score over with the odd boundary. The opening stand lasted 66 runs before Irfan was caught hooking at deep square leg which was shortly followed by Yameen trapped LBW attempting a sweep. Saad and another newcomer Mahdi settled in nicely by running well between the wickets and cracked some lovely boundaries as the pair looked to build on the earlier foundation. Saad was dismissed to a spectacular one handed catch at point which brought skipper Shehan to the crease. Mahdi and Shehan put on a solid partnership with Shehan picking up from where he left off from last season. The pair were eventually dismissed due to the slowness of the pitch however a solid foundation had been set allowing the remaining batsmen to capitalise and eek out as many runs as possible. There were notable efforts from Simon, Jehan, Naufel and Hamdi who all contributed nicely towards the final score of 232-8. Truth be told, the Flyers were greatly aided by some atrocious fielding from the Malayalees as well as leaking a grand total of 45 extras! A more than competitive total none the less.
